Councils call for sustained funding for special needs school places
0Councils have warned that the government’s announcement of an extra £50m to support special needs places in schools should not just be a one-off. The Department for Education announced the money earlier this week, with every council guaranteed at least £115,000.
Richard Watts, chair of the Local Government Association’s children and young people board, said that councils have made it clear that there is a need for “additional and ongoing funding” to educate children with special educational needs and disabilities.
He added: “However this should not be a one-off cash injection and needs to be significant, on-going and sustainable funding, otherwise councils may not be able to meet their statutory duties and many children could miss out on a mainstream education.”
