Councils raise concern at homelessness costs
0A survey by the new New Local Government Network think tank of 188 council leaders and chief executives found 67% believed government funding was not enough to meet the challenging new duty to house homeless people.
Just 19% of those surveyed believed they had enough funding from their homes and revenue accounts.
The duty was brought in under the so-called Blackman Bill which imposed a statutory duty on councils.
The government committed £72.7m in funding but council leaders warned it will only last until 2020 and that demand across the country is greater than expected.
Official figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government released in January revealed homelessness had leapt 165% since 2010.
