Further austerity a ‘threat to London economy’
0Central government must use the forthcoming Spending Review to boost spending on public services to prevent harm to London’s economy, according to a representative body for councils.
London Councils said that a decade of underinvestment in London’s public services poses a “serious threat” to the capital’s businesses and economy.
It said that continued austerity, combined with uncertainty due to Brexit could cause London’s economy to stall.
John Dickie, director of strategy and policy at London First, said: “London’s councils undertake a range of functions that are vital to businesses, from managing planning applications to maintaining roads.
It is essential that the forthcoming spending review enables them, after years of real cuts, to have the resources to do their job properly.”
Peter John, chair of London Councils, said it was “only right that London’s businesses are fully briefed on the impact of underinvestment in local public services”.
