Government must pay public sector workers £2.4bn, GMB claims
0Britain’s biggest public sector union has claimed the government owes pension payments of £2.4bn.
The union claimed that the government had failed to honour a commitment to pay back the 4.1m people working in the NHS, the civil service and in local government for overpayments to their pensions made since 2015.
The union claimed ministers now want to use the money to pay for the aftermath of the McCloud judgement on plans to raise the retirement age.
The case decided that the ‘transitional protection’ offered to some members of the judicial and fire fighters’ schemes as part of the reforms amounted to unlawful discrimination.
The Government is seeking permission to appeal this decision.
If this is unsuccessful, the court will require steps to be taken to compensate employees who were transferred to new schemes.
