Government provides £38m for London’s homeless
0The Ministry of Housing, Local Government and Communities has announced that nearly £38m of the government’s £1.2bn pledged to tackling homelessness will be given to London boroughs to ease the capital’s housing problem.
The new scheme, Capital Letters, announced on 31 December, will encourage London boroughs to co-operate in providing accommodation, and thus help avoid them competing against one another and bidding up prices.
So far, 11 boroughs have signed up the scheme.
London Councils, the body representing the capital’s 32 boroughs and the City, is working to establish a not-for-profit company to deliver the project.
Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: “This radical new way of working and unprecedented collaboration between the boroughs and government will make a real difference – providing more accommodation for the vulnerable and helping them to get back on their feet and away from homelessness for good”.
