Lancashire’s finances ‘at tipping point’

Lancashire County Council’s reserves are at “tipping point” and the authority cannot continue to rely on dipping into its reserves to balance its budgets, according to auditors.

Grant Thornton’s audit report into the council’s 2017–18 accounts said that “difficult decisions” would need to be made this financial year to ensure savings are achieved.

The auditor said that it would consider the use of statutory recommendations if it believes it is appropriate to do so.

“The council’s financial position is at a tipping point and continuing reliance on reserves is seen as unsustainable,” the report said.

Grant Thornton said that it was too early to judge whether actions taken by the council, including new senior staff and a revised operation plan would be successful.
