Major housing acquisition by London borough
0Barking and Dagenham Council has agreed to acquire 936 homes from developer Countryside and housing association L&Q in what has been described as one of the largest bulk housing acquisitions made by a local authority.
The agreement involves the transformation of Beam Park, on the site of a former Ford manufacturing plant in east London. It is part of a wider development involving the delivery of 3,000 homes.
Darren Rodwell, leader of Barking and Dagenham council, said: “This is a great deal which will see nearly a thousand homes for local people, half of which will be affordable, built on this former Ford site.”
He added that the development was part of a “massive shift in gear in the regeneration of Dagenham”, with separate plans for film studios, data centres and a research laboratory.
“No longer will Dagenham be famous for Ford and factories but also film, technology and great homes for everyday people.”
