Nottinghamshire abandons unitary plans
0The leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, Kay Cutts MBE, has said she will not pursue plans to make the area a unitary authority.
Cutts had hope to save £27m a year through making the change from the existing two-tier system, but ran into opposition.
In addition to the county council there are currently seven district councils.
In a statement she said: “… I accept that my view is not universally supported.
“After meeting with district council leaders and chief executives and after much reflection, I have decided to withdraw the Outline Business Case from Thursday’s [13 December] County Council meeting.”
Cutts said that she believed the councils should still consider closer co-operation, including through the harmonisation of bin collections, unifying trading standards and environmental health across the county, and pursuing council mergers
