Scotland’s auditor warns councils over weaknesses
0The growing complexity of Scotland’s public sector is making financial control more difficult, according to a spending watchdog.
The Accounts Commission used a report to warn that systems created to prevent public money being lost to mistakes and fraud are overstretched.
This is due to developments like the integration of health and social care, the expansion of arms’ length bodies and City Deals, it said.
Scotland’s councils spent a combined £12.4bn in 2017/18 but the auditor warned recurring weaknesses are becoming apparent, particularly in information processing, reviews, and separating council employees’ duties in order to prevent fraud.
