Stockton shopping centre makes way for £37m regeneration
0Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has confirmed that the Castlegate shopping centre will be demolished in May ahead of the construction of a £37m waterfront development.
The council said the new development in Stockton “will cover an area three times the size of Trafalgar Square and include flexible spaces, performance spaces, public realm improvements with direct access to the River Tees”. It is part of wider plans to transform the borough’s six town centres – Billingham, Ingleby Barwick, Norton, Stockton, Thornaby and Yarm.
According to Nigel Cooke, cabinet member for regeneration and housing: “This is the next step in the transformation of Stockton town centre, which is about to undergo pivotal changes in order to make it fit for the future in the changing face of retail.”
Castlegate, along with the former Swallow Hotel, were purchased by the council for £13.8m in 2019. The new development is scheduled to open in 2025.
