Ten innovative housing projects identified
0Room151 has identified ten of the most innovative council-run housing projects across the UK involving both social and private markets.
The ten projects are identified in an article, written by local government journalist Mark Smulian. He suggests that reports of the death of local authority house building have been greatly exaggerated and there is, in fact, a resurgence prompted by the lifting of the Housing Revenue Account borrowing cap in 2018.
Many of the new projects involve different housing types – such as social rent programmes combined with low-cost home ownership or market rent or sale properties that cross-subsidise the social rent output.
The ten projects involve: Manchester City Council; the Greater London Authority; the London Borough of Sutton; Stroud District Council; Stoke-on-Trent City Council; Aberdeen City Council; Wrexham County Borough Council; Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council; Wolverhampton City Council; and South Cambridgeshire District Council.
