£1.5bn green retrofit for Birmingham property
0Birmingham City Council has announced a shortlist of providers for its Birmingham Energy Savers scheme.
The scheme will lead to £1.5billion of green retrofit work for nearly 200,000 buildings in Birmingham and across the West Midlands over the next 15 years. Up to 26 contracting bodies, including other local authorities and public bodies, will be involved. The scheme was launched in response to the Government’s Green Deal, establishing a framework for companies to offer energy efficiency improvements at no upfront cost, recouping payments through a charge in installments on energy bills.
The four shortlisted companies include three consortia. They will now develop detailed proposals for the work. Energy saving measures will be delivered to 15,000 households during the first three years of the contract.
Mark Barrow, strategic director for development at Birmingham City Council, said: “Successful roll out will enable Birmingham to deliver on strategically important objectives such as reducing carbon footprint, improving the quality and affordability of homes, address the issue of fuel poverty and create the conditions for a vibrant, low-carbon, economy.”
The contract should be awarded in the autumn of 2012.
