Bill Butler: local audit crisis ‘professionally embarrassing and intolerable’

Action to tackle the local audit crisis has moved the system from ‘intensive care to the high dependency unit’, according to the government’s preferred candidate to chair the new Local Audit Office (LAO).

But Bill Butler warned that concerns remained over the high volumes of disclaimed audit opinions, especially within authorities set to undergo local government reorganisation
